A piece of Westkapelle’s history
- Part of the coastal defences: The Zuiderhoofd was built to protect the coast near Westkapelle against currents and beach erosion. The groyne keeps the current away from the shore and breaks the waves, helping to protect the Zuiderstrand from erosion.
- Historic origins: The groyne in its current form was built in 1906. Before that, the old Plankiershoofd stood about fifteen metres further north, with a history dating back to the first half of the 16th century.
- Historic function: In the past, the groyne not only played a role in coastal protection, but was also used as a landing place for pilots and for delivering materials used to reinforce the dyke.
Thorough restoration: In 1993, the Zuiderhoofd underwent a major restoration. It now consists of about four hundred hardwood piles ranging from 3 to 15 metres in length and around 525 metres of oak connections, such as stringers and caps.
