Bunker Complex Dishoek - Monument

The Dishoek bunker complex lies hidden in the dunes of Dishoek, close to Vlissingen. Volunteers of Stichting Bunkerverhalen have dug out and fitted out the German Atlantic Wall bunkers to tell the stories of the war, from both sides.

What can you expect at the Dishoek bunker complex?

• History: The Germans built the complex as part of the Atlantic Wall. When Walcheren was declared a fortress in 1944, they defended the Westerschelde from here, and heavy fighting took place on 1 November 1944. After the war it served for some 30 years as a headquarters for the navy and NATO.
• Restoration: Led by John Daane, volunteers removed some 100,000 kilos of rubble from the bunkers. They added electricity and made everything safe for visitors. A munitions bunker now houses an exhibition on the Cold War.
• Guided tours: A guided tour lasts about an hour and a half. The guides share stories from both sides, such as that of Allied medic John Forfar and a German doctor.
• Highlights: Highlights of the Dishoek bunker complex are:
  • The type M159 hospital bunker, the only one of its type in the Netherlands.
  • The type 622 personnel bunkers with visible battle damage, such as a Typhoon rocket hit.
  • The M145 munitions bunker, with original lists of ammunition types still on the walls.

Practical information

• Visit: The complex opens on set open days, such as the Weekend van het Verdedigingserfgoed in April and Bunkerdag in May, and for guided tours by reservation.
• Children: On open days there is a treasure hunt for children aged 4 to 7 and 8 to 12.
• Good to know: There is no parking and there are no toilets at the bunkers, and the site is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The complex is on the cycle route along the Atlantic Wall.
