Zuiderhoofd - Observation point

The Zuiderhoofd is a striking groyne extending into the sea on the southern side of the Westkapelle sea dyke.

What makes the Zuiderhoofd special?

A typical Westkapelle spot: In Westkapelle, this place is mainly known by its local name ’t Groôt ’Ôôd. On old hydraulic engineering drawings, you may also come across the name Plankiershoofd.
Part of the coastal defences: The Zuiderhoofd was built to protect the coast near Westkapelle against currents and beach erosion. In that way, this spot also tells part of the story of the centuries-long battle against the sea.
Historic function: In the past, the groyne was not only used for coastal protection, but also served as a landing place for pilots and for the delivery of materials used in strengthening the dyke.
Popular fishing spot: The Zuiderhoofd is popular with anglers. You will regularly see people fishing here, which adds to the lively and distinctly Zeeland atmosphere.
A lovely place to get some fresh air: During a walk along the Westkapelle sea dyke or by the beach, the Zuiderhoofd is a fine place to pause for a moment and experience the power of the coast.
