De Noorman - Mill
The listed national monument De Noorman is a historic corn mill on the Molenwal in Westkapelle. This round stone tower mill was built in 1852 and, together with the lighthouses, is one of the best-known landmarks of the village.
What makes De Noorman special?
- Only remaining mill: In the past, several mills stood in Westkapelle, but De Noorman was the only one to survive the violence of war in 1944, when the village was heavily affected.
- Local significance: According to tradition, the name refers to the supposed descent of the inhabitants of Westkapelle from the Normans. The mill used to be known locally as the fondsmolen.
- Beautiful part of the village view: With its tall tower, stage and sails, De Noorman is very much part of the character of Westkapelle.
- Technical details: The mill has a stage height of 4.4 metres, a sail span of 22.3 metres, two pairs of millstones and a flour dresser for producing flour.
Practical information
- Opening: The mill is generally open on Wednesday afternoons from 13:15 to 17:00, when the sails are turning.
Mill De Noorman is not a major attraction, but it is an atmospheric place where the history of Westkapelle, the sea and the Zeeland landscape come together beautifully.
