Molenhoofd - Observation point

The Molenhoofd in Westkapelle is a lovely viewpoint on the coast, beside the well-known Westkapelle sea dyke. From here, you look out over the North Sea, the beach, the dyke and the groynes stretching far out into the water.

• Rugged Zeeland coastal nature: The wooden posts in the water are often covered with seaweed and mussels. This gives the Molenhoofd a tough, natural character and clearly shows how powerful the sea can be here.
• Part of the coastal defences: Like other groynes along the Zeeland coast, the Molenhoofd is part of the story of protection against the sea, currents and erosion. The Westkapelle sea dyke is one of the best-known sea defences in the Netherlands.
• Historic location: The name Molenhoofd refers to the dyke mill that once stood here. The coastal landscape changed dramatically after the bombing of the Westkapelle sea dyke in 1944, when a large breach in the dyke was created.
• Light beacon by the sea: At the Molenhoofd, there is a small light beacon with red and white stripes. This light serves as a landmark for shipping and gives the place even more character.

The Molenhoofd is not a major attraction, but rather one of those places where you can really feel the atmosphere of Westkapelle. The sea, the wind, the dyke and the history come together beautifully here. It is an ideal stop during a walk along the coast or a cycling trip across Walcheren.

• Location: The Molenhoofd is located on the Westkapelle sea dyke, west of the beach of Westkapelle and below the dyke near the Liberation Monument.
• Easy to combine with: The Molenhoofd is close to the centre of Westkapelle and the Polderhuis. This makes it easy to combine with a walk along the dyke, a visit to the museum or a stroll through the village.
• Tip for visitors: Come at sunset or when the wind is strong. The view is often especially beautiful then, and you can see the power of the sea at its best.
